In Norse mythology, Jörmungandr is the Midgard Serpent, the middle child of Loki and a giantess. Cast into the sea that surrounds the world, the serpent grew so large that it encircles the world and grasps its own tail in its mouth; when it releases its tail, Ragnarok will begin. Jörmungandr is an example of ouroboros, a motif often interpreted as representing an eternal cycle of renewal through birth and death.
